Abstract

|
A case of most probable protein-losing enteropathy secondary to constrictive pericarditis in a 13 year-old child is reported. The case has had gereralized edema and unexplainable hypoproteinmia associated with marked ascites and pleural effusion for five years. The child underwent pericardiectomy resulting in complete relief of symptoms and prompt return of serum protein levels to normal. Though not verified by the specific diagnostic studies, we attributed the unexplainable hyporproteinemia to the intestinal protein loss by ruling out other possible routes of excessive protein loss. A pertinent literatures were reviewed briefly.
